In this workshop, we will learn the process of making four-panel comics, from idea generation to a finished piece. Students will learn thumbnailing, how to frame panels and basic character structure. Designing the panel, we will look at examples from movies and TV shows to see how creators tell stories visually. We can think of comics as a combination of drawing and creative writing – students can draw material from their own experience, or a Mood Board (a collection of influences, favorite work, or genres). There is a story-generating technique used in Improv Theater called “yes-and” which translates well to comics – it also helps foster a friendly/open state of mind that’s important for the creative process.
